Specification
Sodium Metasilicate Anhydrous is a white, free-flowing granular or powdered inorganic compound produced by fusing high-purity silica sand and soda ash at temperatures above 1,100 °C. Unlike the pentahydrate form, the anhydrous version contains virtually no water of crystallization (<0.5% typical), offering superior stability, higher active alkalinity, and significantly better shelf life in humid environments.

Application
Industrial & Institutional Cleaning: Primary alkaline builder in heavy-duty detergents, ware-wash compounds, metal cleaners, and floor cleaners.
Textile Processing: Peroxide bleach stabilizer and detergent booster.
Ceramics & Cement: Deflocculant and binder in ceramic slips and refractory cements.
Water Treatment: Corrosion inhibitor for potable and industrial water systems.
Oilfield & Drilling: Component of high-pH drilling fluids.
Pulp & Paper: Peroxide stabilizer in de-inking and bleaching processes.
Adhesives & Sealants: High-temperature binder for cardboard and foundry cores.
Q: What is the difference between sodium metasilicate anhydrous and pentahydrate?
A: Anhydrous contains <0.5% moisture and ≈51% Na₂O, while pentahydrate (Na₂SiO₃·5H₂O) contains ~42% water of crystallization and only ≈29% Na₂O. Anhydrous is preferred when maximum alkalinity, stability, or cost-per-active-kilo is required.
Q: Is Sodium Metasilicate Anhydrous the same as "water glass" in solid form?
A: Yes. "Water glass" usually refers to liquid sodium silicate solutions, but the anhydrous granular form is the solid equivalent with a 1:1 Na₂O:SiO₂ ratio.
Q: Can it be used in automatic ware-wash dispensers?
A: Yes, the granular anhydrous form dissolves rapidly and is widely used in solid dishwasher detergents and institutional ware-wash compounds.
Q: Is it safe for aluminum and soft metals?
A: No. Sodium metasilicate is highly alkaline (pH >12.5) and will etch or corrode aluminum, zinc, and tin at typical use concentrations. Use sodium silicate with higher SiO₂ ratios (2.0–3.2) or add silicate inhibitors for aluminum-safe formulations.
Q: Is it biodegradable or environmentally friendly?
A: Sodium metasilicate is inorganic and does not biodegrade, but it is readily neutralized in wastewater treatment and does not persist in the environment. It is phosphate-free and helps reduce eutrophication compared to STPP.
